This study is a case study of a girl who is known to exhibit institutional maladjustment. The child, who had demonstrated hypersensitivity since birth, had not been able to cope adequately in unfamiliar situations due to experiencing high tension and anxiety. The therapist performed a total of 36 sessions of child-centered play therapy to facilitate emotional stability by forming a trusting relationship with her. These sessions were conducted to help the child recognize and express her emotions properly in unfamiliar situations. The therapist further mediated to help the child¡¯s mother to provide stable emotional support, and offered parenting advice to reduce parenting stress and to restore the parental relationship. In addition, a cognitive activity program was conducted in parallel to improve the child¡¯s confidence in structured activities and reduce her sense of rejection of the new environment. As a result of the sessions, the mother-child relationship was positively promoted. The child, due to the sessions, was able to recognize and verbally express her own emotions appropriately while her tension lessened. Furthermore, it was confirmed that experiencing of various cognitive activities while taking into consideration the emotional characteristics of the child can reduce children¡¯s psychological anxiety and raise their self-confidence before they enter the elementary school.
